Every mobile performer knows the tension between sound and logistics: you want a system that fills the room, but you also have to carry it, set it up quickly, and fit it in the car. The Studiomaster DIRECT 121MX is built to settle that argument. It is a self-powered column array PA that packs down into a couple of manageable parts, sets up in seconds, and puts out a genuinely big sound. Prices start from £649.
What a column array actually does. Rather than one large box firing sound in a wide arc, a column array uses a slim vertical speaker to spread sound evenly across a room while keeping it off the ceiling and floor. The result is clear, consistent coverage from the front row to the back, with less of the boominess and harshness you get from a single point-source cabinet. It is also far less obtrusive to look at, which matters at weddings and corporate events.
The sound, in two parts. The system pairs a slim column carrying six 3-inch mid-range drivers and a 1-inch compression driver, which together deliver clear vocals and detailed highs, with a 12-inch active subwoofer housed in a wooden bass-reflex enclosure for deep, punchy low end. A built-in 2000-watt amplifier drives the lot, so there is plenty of headroom for a full dancefloor or a live band.
A mixer built in. There is no need for a separate desk for smaller jobs, because a 4-channel DSP mixer is built into the sub. It gives you two switchable mic/line inputs with their own gain and reverb, a Hi-Z input for plugging in a guitar or bass directly, and an RCA and Bluetooth stereo input for music playback, plus an XLR line output should you want to feed another system. That covers a DJ set, a solo singer, a small band or a spoken-word event without extra kit.
Bluetooth 5.0 with true wireless stereo. You can stream music straight to the system over Bluetooth 5.0, and thanks to TWS (True Wireless Stereo) you can pair two DIRECT 121MX systems as a proper left-and-right stereo pair without running a cable between them. For background music, presentations or a quick setup, that is genuinely convenient.
Set up in seconds. The column sections and sub connect together through a clever internal connector, so there are no speaker cables to run between the parts. You stack it, plug in the mains, and you are ready. When the night is over it breaks back down into a few easy-to-carry pieces, and optional bags make transport tidier still.
One thing to weigh up. A single DIRECT 121MX produces mono sound, which is perfectly good for speech and many smaller gigs. If you want true stereo, or you regularly cover larger rooms and busier dancefloors, a pair is the way to go, and the system is designed with exactly that expansion in mind.
For mobile DJs, solo musicians and small bands, function performers, presenters, schools and houses of worship, the DIRECT 121MX offers a rare combination of clear, room-filling sound, all-in-one convenience and easy transport. See the full spec on the Studiomaster DIRECT 121MX product page, compare it with other column array PA systems and the wider PA systems range, add a microphone if you need one, and spread the cost with finance if that suits you.
