There’s a familiar problem for DJs who are past the absolute beginner stage: you’ve learned the basics on a controller, you’re getting good, but the leap to a real club setup - separate CDJs, a standalone mixer, a totally different layout - feels bigger than it should. AlphaTheta’s new XDJ-AN is built specifically to close that gap.
It’s a 2-channel all-in-one DJ system with a layout based directly on AlphaTheta’s professional CDJ and DJM series gear. That’s the headline feature, and it matters more than it might sound: instead of learning on a layout that’s specific to a beginner controller, you’re learning on the same workflow you’ll find behind a booth in a real club. When you do eventually step up to standalone CDJs and a DJM mixer, there’s nothing new to figure out.
The AlphaTheta XDJ-AN has another big selling point, which is how many ways it lets you get music playing. StreamingDirectPlay gives you direct access to tracks from compatible streaming services right on the unit, mixed seamlessly with other sources - so you’re not stuck buying and organising a USB library before you can start a session. CloudDirectPlay and Cloud Library Sync go a step further: with a compatible rekordbox subscription, you can access your cloud-based library from Dropbox or Google Drive directly from the unit, and any changes you make - Hot Cues, playlist edits - sync straight back to the cloud.
On top of that, the XDJ-AN works with mobile apps too. Perform straight from your phone using rekordbox for iOS or djay for iOS, no laptop required, and use the DJM-REC app if you want to stream or record your sets for social media.
AlphaTheta has carried its sound design expertise into the XDJ-AN, with clear, powerful audio at all volume levels. You’ve got XLR outputs for professional PA and speaker setups, RCA outputs for a wider range of consumer gear, and Bluetooth input/output for extra flexibility when you need it.
There’s also a genuinely useful feature for anyone who practises with headphones a lot: a built-in SonicLink transmitter. Pair the XDJ-AN with compatible wireless headphones, like the HDJ-F10, and you get ultra-low-latency monitoring - as low as 9 msec - with no extra transmitter or cable needed.
AlphaTheta’s positioning here is pretty clear-cut, and we agree with it: the XDJ-AN is for beginners who are serious about DJing and want to start on the right foundation, and for DJs with some controller experience who want to level up and get comfortable with club-style gear before they play out. If your ambition is to actually perform in venues eventually, rather than just mix at home for fun, this is the more sensible starting point than a standard beginner controller.
The XDJ-AN solves a real problem - the awkward middle ground between “learning on a beginner controller” and “playing on actual club gear.” Getting that transition right, in one unit, at a genuinely competitive price point, is a strong move from AlphaTheta. If you’re weighing this up against a standard controller or wondering whether it’s worth the jump straight to a CDJ and mixer setup, get in touch - we can talk you through what actually makes sense for where you’re at.
